A Brief History of PBS

As a result of the “General Statistics (Re-organization) Act-2011, Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) has been established under section 3 of the General Statistics Act, 2011 through merger of Federal Bureau of Statistics (FBS), the Population Census Organization (PCO), the Agricultural Census Organization (ACO) and the Technical Wing of Statistics Division. 

Governing Council of PBS

The Federal Government has constituted the following Governing Council of the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics is as under: 1. Minister for Finance, Revenue, Chairman(ex-officio) Economic Affairs and Statistics. 2. Secretary, Statistics Division Member (ex-officio) 3. Prof. Muhammad Nizam ud Din, Member Vice Chancellor, Gujrat University 4. Dr. Zaiba A. Sathar, Country Director, Member Population Council (Pakistan Office) Islamabad. 5. Dr. Naveed Hamid, Prof. of Economics, Member Lahore School of Economics, Lahore 6. Dr. Mehtab S. Karim, Member Former Prof. Agha Khan University, Karachi 7. Dr. Eshya Mujahid Mukhtar, Economist Member 8. Dr. Asad Zaman, Director General International Institute of Islamic Economics Member 9. Mr. Mohsin Hassan Khan (IMF retired) Member 10. Chief Statistician of the Bureau Member/Secretary (Ex-Officio)

National Users Council of PBS

As per decision of the Governing Council under section 12 of the General Statistics (Re-organization) Act, 2011, the National Users Council (NUC) has been constituted in PBS as a consolidated body to Act as a bridge between the Government (The Statistics producer) and the public (The Statistics users), in general and the policy makers, researchers, academia and media in particular. The composition of the National Users Council is as under:- 1. Chairman, P&D Board, Punjab, additional Chief Secretaries (Development) or Directors General/Directors, Bureau of Statistics, of Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhawa and Baluchistan. 2. Dr. G.M. Arif, Joint Director, Pakistan Institute of Development Economics Quaid-e-Azam University Campus, Islamabad. 3. Dr. Zakir Hussain, Vice Chancellor, Government College University, Faisalabad. 4. Prof. Dr. Hafeez ur Rehman, Chairman, Department of Economics, University of the Punjab, Lahore. 5. Dr. Shahida Wizarat, head of Economics Department, Institute of Business Management, Karachi. 6. DR. Farooq Naseer, Assistant Professor, Department of Economics, Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS), Lahore Cantt. 7. Ms. Aban Haq, Chief Operating Officer, Pakistan Micro Finance Network, Islamabad. 8. Prof. Dr. Eatzaz Ahmad, Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, Quaid-e-Azam University, Islamabad. 9. Mr. Khurram Hussain, Free Lance Journalist, Karachi 10. Member (National Accounts), Pakistan Bureau of Statistics, Islamabad.

PBS System of Data Collection and its Dissemination

Collection, compilation and dissemination of data on various socio-economic sectors is the primary function of Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS). These data are collected from primary and Secondary Sources. The primary data are collected through different censuses / surveys such as Population and Housing Census, Agriculture Census, Livestock Census, Agricultural Machinery Census, Mouza Census, Labour Force Survey (LFS), Household Integrated Economic Survey (HIES), Pakistan Social and Living Standards Measurement Survey (PSLM), Pakistan Demographic Survey (PDS) Milk Production Survey, Commercial Poultry Survey, Animals Slaughtered Survey, etc. Secondary data such as Foreign Trade Statistics, Industrial Statistics, Transport and Communication Statistics, Social Statistics, Agriculture Statistics, Environment Statistics etc. are collected from the records of concerned Ministries/Departments. Demand for data is increasing tremendously and that too in computer readable form. Such demands are made mainly by various Government/Semi-Govt., Non Government Organization (NGOs), Research/Educational Institutions and International Organizations etc. within and outside the country. Data are being disseminated by the following means:- i. Postal Services ii. Print/Electronic Media iii. Statistical news letters/Publications iv. E-mails/IT facilities / CDs etc.

Establishment of Statistical Training and Research Institute

The Training Wing of PBS has undertaken intensive training programme for capacity building of statisticians for data producers and data users organizations. Training aimed at imparting skills of modern statistical techniques and methodology in addition to latest computer software programmes. With growing demand for additional and upto-date knowledge there was a need to expand and modernize the training facility into an internationally recognized Training and Research Institute. For this purpose, the Government have decided to build a new Training and Research Institute at Lahore. Planning and preliminary work of building construction is in progress.
