To generate economic statistics as per national and international practices for the fulfillment of overall goal of Pakistan Bureau of Statistics.
To initiate the working on second Economic Census in Pakistan, a Section has been established in Pakistan Bureau of Statistics, headed by the Director General, Economic Statistics. Economic Census Section has been assigned the task of conducting Economic Census in the country including Gilgit Baltistan and Azad Jamu Kashmir with active collaboration and coordination of all the stakeholders. This Census would be based on the Economic Frame extracted from House Listing Operation (HLO) of 7th Population and Housing Census-2023.For development of Economic Frame, cleaning and correction of Economic Frame of Population & Housing Census-2023 is under process. Currently, verification of the frame for districts i.e. Karachi, Lahore, Faisalabad, Gujranwala is underway by constituting different teams.

The Economic Census is a statistical enquiry which is conducted to collect information about characteristics of all the economic units, both at household and business establishment level, in a country. The Economic Census can be considered as the 2nd largest statistics generating activity after the Population and Housing Census. Economic Census requires mapping of the entire country, covering all economic units even at households’ level.
The First Economic Census was conducted during April, 2001 to December, 2003 throughout Pakistan and its Report was published in 2005. Total 26,144 enumeration blocks in urban areas and 45,817 mouzas/villages in rural areas excluding FATA were covered. About 1388 enumerators were engaged to carry out the census, which included 1088 contract and 300 regular enumerators working in Regional / Field offices of the then FBS.
All enumeration Blocks, both in Urban and Rural areas, involved in an economic activity, excluding illegal economic activities, agricultural production and government organizations activities are enumerated.
